Artworks are things that are intended to be viewed and appreciated. They are generally defined by their purpose and form, according to different philosophical perspectives. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that explores the nature of art and its related concepts. Aesthetics is studied in the fields of art criticism and the history of art.

While the notion of art is transhistorical and therefore cannot be fully defined in cultural terms, art critics agree that the purpose of making artworks is to be viewed. Despite this fact, art can still be categorized according to aesthetic value. Moreover, the intention to create artworks is still an important feature.

Artworks are usually created by artists, who use various mediums to make them. They may include paintings, sculptures, and graphics. Sometimes, they are created with the intention of expressing a culture. Another form of visual art is photography, which uses a keen eye to compose a scene. Installations, on the other hand, are an entire experience that occupy the space. Moreover, they often incorporate multiple senses to communicate with the viewers.

Artwork definitions attempt to explain the various forms of art and their purposes. However, it is difficult to determine what kind of art is art if one does not know how to categorize it. The concept of art is not self-evident, and it has many overlapping features. Thus, the definition of art needs to include an account of how art is made.

The essence of art can be defined by the way it serves as a form of truth and being. Many cultures use art as decoration and as a symbol. However, this function is often associated with a cosmological relationship in the community. Art does not have a single source of meaning, rather it is a consequence of generations of change and cosmological relationship within a culture.

Some artists define art as a set of distinctive properties that make an artwork artful. Some of these properties may be merely physical, while others may have more complex or elusive properties. For example, artworks may have a long-term effect, such as being aesthetically pleasing to the observer. In addition, it can be viewed as an expression of a certain time period.

It has been found that art can transcend racial, social, and economic boundaries. Although it cannot solve all issues of social justice, it does bring people together through their common experience and emotion. In this way, art breaks down barriers of discrimination and helps create awareness. Further, it can even lead to tolerance and acceptance among people from different backgrounds.

The main purpose of art can be to express ideas, create beauty, or explore the nature of perception. Many artists create artworks for different purposes. Sometimes, they are even seeking to sell a product.
