The Definition of Art

According to the term “artworld” coined by Arthur Danto, artworks are things that belong to a particular art form. Its essential properties include its subject, style, and art historical context. But these characteristics are not sufficient. There must be a deeper understanding of the nature of the art form to properly judge its worth. This article will examine three different approaches to the definition of art. In addition to describing the characteristics of an artwork, we will also consider how art is produced.

As a means of accessing the higher levels of the brain, art can help people gain knowledge in other areas. Creativity is an intelligence that unlocks the infinite potential of the human mind. The power of art is so powerful that people from all walks of life have discovered it. They have also suffered censorship, threats, and even murder for their art. Despite all this, people have continued to be inspired by artworks, and have even embraced them.

The materials used in creating artworks are also important. There are many specific categories based on the medium used. Oils, watercolours, and acrylics are some examples of paintings. Metals and ceramics are also important to consider in an art piece. In addition to painting and sculpture, plastic art can also include works that have been moulded, shaped, or otherwise manipulated by a human being. Among these are megalithic monuments and rock art.

Another category of art is categorized as “visual art.” These are works that express an idea or world view. In addition to serving as a means for self-expression, art also serves as a medium for communicating ideas, emotions, and cultural values through its design. Often, art serves as a cultural time capsule. Artworks can express social norms or reflect the aesthetic tastes of an era. The question of what constitutes art has been debated for centuries.

While these approaches are often critical, the basic premise of feminist art philosophy is to acknowledge the fact that gender is a major determinant of its value. The Western artistic canon is heavily skewed in favor of male artists, while the conception of “genius” was developed in ways that excluded women from making art. The same reasoning applies to art definitions. This is why we must be wary of traditional philosophical definitions. They are often outdated and misleading.
