A new limited-time photo exhibition called “Women in Science” opens this week at MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, and it aims to spotlight the powerful, female minds behind cutting-edge scientific research happening locally and globally. Thanks to a unique collaboration between The Squire Foundation, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UC Santa Barbara and MOXI, this collection of portraits and audio stories, captured by artist Nicole Berry, will be on display in the Exploration Hall gallery at the museum beginning Saturday, February 23.

As a Squire Foundation Community Artist, Berry has spent the last year as an Artist in Residence with NCEAS, taking portraits and collecting stories from researchers at the center, all of whom do extraordinary work to understand environmental phenomena, challenges and solutions, conducting studies in a variety of fields from ocean health and global food system sustainability to Arctic science and plastic pollution. The goal of Berry’s work is to confront preconceived notions about who scientists are or what they look like and showcase “the true faces of science.” The exhibition at MOXI marks the first public display of Berry’s work as a result of her residency.

The exhibit includes a collection of Berry’s framed portraits, some of which include accompanying stories from the women photographed, which can be listened to via headsets installed next to select portraits. Notably, the installation is in the Exploration Hall space at MOXI, which is the hallway that leads to the museum’s Exploration Lab, where students visiting on field trips participate in Engineering Explorations programs. Thousands of students on their way to programs in the Lab and daily guests of the museum have the potential to be inspired by these “true faces of science” during the exhibition, which runs through August 25. MOXI Members will be among the first to see the exhibition and also meet artist Nicole Berry during a special Members-Only Morning at the museum this Saturday, February 23 from 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. After this special event, the exhibition will be open to the public and included with general admission to the museum. MOXI is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
